Ben Shelton Pays Emotional Tribute as ‘Big Brother’ Christopher Eubanks Retires at 29

Nov 18, 2025, 9:28 PM CUT

There are moments in tennis that go beyond rankings, trophies, and roaring stadiums... moments where the sport pauses to honor the human stories woven into its fabric. On a quiet morning that sent ripples through the tennis world, 29-year-old American tennis star Christopher Eubanks announced his retirement, closing a chapter defined by perseverance, charisma, and a late-career breakthrough that captured global admiration. But amid the heartfelt messages pouring in, one stood out, because it came from a player who’s more like a younger brother to him than just a peer, representing the same ‘Stars and Stripes.’

Ben Shelton, the 23-year-old blazing left-handed star of American tennis, didn’t pen a long essay or a formal farewell. Instead, he chose a few simple words that carried the weight of a shared journey. Eubanks announced his retirement from tennis on Monday through an IG post. He shared a few pictures of his tennis journey and captioned it with, If you had told this little boy from the Southside of Atlanta that he would’ve accomplished all that he did, he wouldn’t believe you.”

Christopher Eubanks made his professional debut in 2017, and throughout these eight years, he won just one singles title. He reached a career-high ranking of 29 on 31 July 2023. It was the same year when he reached the QF of Wimbledon (his best run at a major tournament). Highlighting some of those moments, Eubanks added, “2 Time ACC Player of the Year? Yeah, right.  Wimbledon Quarter-finalist? No chance. An Olympian? Unfathomable. I was given the opportunity to travel around the world and form incredible relationships, all while fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing professional tennis. I can’t put into words how blessed I have been. Is this absolutely the end?! Tough to say for certain, but if it is, WHOOPTY DOO!!! It’s been an incredible ride.” Later on, Ben Shelton shared this post on his IG stories with the caption, “Happy to share a million memories with you on your journey, @chris_eubanks96. Excited for your next chapter 🤞🏼.”

And with that, he pulled back the curtain on a relationship that had shaped his early years on tour. Their friendship began long before Shelton became a Grand Slam semifinalist or Eubanks became a beloved face of the ATP Tour. When Shelton first stepped onto the professional circuit, wide-eyed and eager, Eubanks was already there - steady, warm, and ready to help the youngster navigate the unpredictable rhythm of life on tour.

In November 2022, during a conversation at the Charlottesville Challenger, Ben Shelton admitted all of these by saying, “Nobody really understands what Chris has done for me. The support he’s given me is unmatched. He’s a selfless human being and a big brother to me.” Christopher Eubanks’ easy laughter, towering 6’7” presence, and gentle mentorship made him the kind of older brother every rising player quietly hopes to find. And Shelton, with his fearless game and youthful fire, was the kind of player Eubanks naturally gravitated toward.

Speaking about Shelton during an interview in December 2023 with ‘Tennis Channel Inside-In,’ Eubanks said, “To see the notoriety and the fame and everything that he’s kind of gotten, I personally don’t think it could have happened to a better person. I think he’s an incredible kid. He’s so talented. And at the end of the day, to see kind of the world finding out who Ben Shelton is, it’s been really cool because I feel like I’ve been right there, kind of a little maybe not from the beginning.”

So, Christopher Eubanks didn’t just watch Ben Shelton; he nudged him higher. And Shelton’s tribute captured that perfectly. It wasn’t about loss; it was about legacy, brotherhood, and the profound impact Eubanks had far beyond the match court. However, Shelton wasn’t the only one to pen down a note for this tennis star on his retirement announcement.

Coco Gauff also shares her thoughts on Christopher Eubank’s recent announcement

Christopher Eubanks didn’t walk away from the game with a trophy in his hands, but he left with something far more precious: the admiration and love of the tennis world. And on the day he announced his retirement at just 29, those emotions came pouring in from every corner of the sport. Among the first to speak up was someone who shares a similar close bond with Eubanks, just like Shelton.

Eubanks has time and again said he’s especially “close” with Coco Gauff, whom he’s known for years. He even describes her as his “little sister”. Just like with Shelton, he also shares a very close bond with the WTA star. Do you know that in 2019, Eubanks, Gauff, and Williams all trained with Patrick Mouratoglou in Boca Raton?

From the locker rooms of Atlanta to the lawns of Wimbledon, where he shocked the world with that QF run, Christopher Eubanks’ career was a story of resilience. On his IG post, Gauff dropped a comment saying, “team 🦒4 lifeeeeee.” Later on, she even shared an IG story with the caption, “from union crossing courts in atl to centre court wimbledon. 🦒 4 lifeeee.”

Before turning pro, Eubanks had a very impressive collegiate career at Georgia Tech (90-33 w-l record). He also became the first Yellow Jacket to earn ACC Player of the Year twice (2016, 2017). Highlighting all the achievements that he had with the tennis racket in his hand, Mouratoglou wrote, “Amazing, my friend! Such a story!”

Christopher Eubanks’ former mixed doubles partner, Taylor Townsend, commented on the post saying, “WHOOPY DOO MY PATNA PATNA! Proud of everything you have done and will do! You are a champ on and off the court!” His other compatriot, Tommy Paul, pointed out one of the pictures from his post and wrote, “Slide 3 is who I met back in the southern days,” while John Isner hailed Eubanks as an “NC legend.”

Several other players like Naomi Osaka, Kim Clijsters, Jennifer Brady, Victoria Mboko, Alexandra Eala, and many more shared their thoughts on the same. Eubanks may be retiring from professional tennis, but his presence will linger in every handshake line, every locker-room laugh, and every young player who believes they belong because he once believed in them.

Although his career didn’t end the way he would’ve wanted, with just a 3-6 record in 2025 and being ranked 266th in the world, it’ll be interesting to see what he does next. For Eubanks, the next chapter begins off the court, where many believe he’ll shine just as brightly, whether in commentary, coaching, or whatever dream he chooses to chase. But for now, the story ends on a note of gratitude, wrapped in the love of the community he helped shape. Share your thoughts on Christopher Eubanks' amazing tennis career in the comment section.
