Ben Shelton Tipped to Lead American Charge at Indian Wells

Indian Wells is right around the corner, and the debate over which American man can shine brightest in Tennis Paradise is heating up. With a stacked home contingent headlined by top-10 stars, former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard has made her pick clear - Ben Shelton.
Speaking to Tennis Channel, Bouchard didn’t hesitate when asked which American she believes will go the furthest at Indian Wells. “Ben Shelton. The evolution of his game has been so impressive, and he often plays his best at the biggest events. With Indian Wells looking like the biggest US tournament behind the US Open itself, Tennis Paradise is an ideal stage for Shelton, who already won a first Masters 1000 title in Canada last summer.”
Ben Shelton arrives in California riding serious momentum. The world No. 8 recently triumphed at the Dallas Open, where he defeated Taylor Fritz in the final. With a 10-2 win-loss record this season, Shelton’s form suggests he’s primed for another statement run.
However, Bouchard isn’t alone in her belief. Former doubles standout Nick Monroe also sided with Shelton. “Ben Shelton. He’s my pick to make a run due to the tournament’s unique combination of surface speed. The way the ball can jump and zip in these conditions should help Shelton’s already-phenomenal lefty serve be even more dangerous - and encourage him to come forward more often,” Monroe explained.

But not everyone is placing their chips on Shelton. Former American star Sam Querrey threw his support behind Tommy Paul, noting Paul’s hunger to reassert himself after slipping behind Fritz and Shelton late last season. “If he’s healthy and playing well, he just may be the most dangerous American man in the field,” Querrey remarked.
Meanwhile, respected coach Paul Annacone stayed loyal to Fritz, backing him to thrive at his home event. “Total transparency: how can I go against my man in his hometown tournament?” Annacone said.
Beyond Shelton, Fritz, and Paul, the American lineup also features names like Frances Tiafoe, Reilly Opelka, Brandon Nakashima, Ethan Quinn, and Sebastian Korda - making this one of the strongest home fields in years.
While American optimism is high, one major obstacle looms: Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard has been in formidable form and has already proven he thrives in the desert conditions of Indian Wells. The big question now is whether Ben Shelton’s explosive left-handed serve and fearless shot-making can disrupt Alcaraz’s rhythm on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
Ben Shelton is predicted to outshine Carlos Alcaraz at the Indian Wells
Ben Shelton may trail Carlos Alcaraz in their head-to-head record, but that hasn’t stopped experts from tipping the American to spring a surprise at Indian Wells. With the desert showdown looming, several voices in the tennis world believe Shelton has the tools to challenge - and possibly outshine - the Spaniard on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
Carlos Alcaraz currently leads Shelton 3-0 in their head-to-head battles. Their most recent clash came at the 2025 French Open, where Alcaraz once again emerged victorious. Yet, despite maintaining a perfect record, the world No. 1 had nothing but praise for his rival. “He's an unbelievable player,” Alcaraz said after that win. “We both have huge respect for each other. Every time we face each other, we bring a high level and play good tennis. He's a really powerful player and can make any shot.”
That mutual respect underscores just how competitive their encounters have been - even if Shelton hasn’t yet broken through. Renowned coach Patrick Mouratoglou has previously drawn comparisons between Shelton and Alcaraz, highlighting their shared ability to raise their level without warning.
“Sometimes when he has a down, he’s dominated, he’s missing, and suddenly something clicks,” Mouratoglou said of Shelton. “Ben is able to go to that position in terms of level of play. When he does this in a lot of matches, there is no more option for the opponent. Not many players can handle it, and the same with Carlos.”
It’s that explosive gear shift that could make Shelton especially dangerous in best-of-three-set matches - the format used at Indian Wells. Former WTA star Alison Riske-Amritraj is firmly in Shelton’s corner. She pointed to their meeting at Roland Garros, where Shelton not only captured a set but also had chances to push the match even further.
“I’m going with the American Ben Shelton. I think that he has the game to really disrupt a lot of players on tour, and we have to remember it’s best of three sets. At Indian Wells, so he just needs to play well for a couple of sets. He had that epic match against him at Roland Garros last year, where he lost in four sets.”
Riske further added, “He did have some chances in the first to take it as well, so he has the confidence to know that he can play alongside Carlos. And like I said, for two sets I take Ben Shelton against anybody.”
Alcaraz boasts a remarkable record in the Californian desert, winning 20 of his 23 matches across five appearances and lifting the trophy twice at the BNP Paribas Open. Stopping him there is arguably one of the toughest assignments in men’s tennis right now.
Still, belief around Ben Shelton is growing. His left-handed serve, fearless baseline aggression, and ability to ignite under pressure make him a genuine threat - particularly in quicker best-of-three encounters.
Whether Shelton can finally flip the script against Carlos Alcaraz remains to be seen. But if expert predictions are anything to go by, the American might just be ready to turn promise into proof in Tennis Paradise. What are your thoughts on Shelton’s chances against the world number one at Indian Wells, though?
