Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s Biggest Threats Assessed by Former World No. 3

Dec 20, 2025, 12:40 PM CUT

For the better part of the last two seasons, the ATP Tour has felt like a two-man highway. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, young, fearless, and relentlessly consistent, have taken turns setting the pace, rewriting expectations, and leaving the rest of the field scrambling to keep up. Yet tennis, as history has repeatedly shown, never stays a duopoly for long.

And according to former world number 3, Nadia Petrova, the next wave of challengers might already be closer than many think. Speaking to Sampionat, the former Russian pro peeled back the layers of the current men’s tour and pointed to a handful of players who, in her view, possess the tools to disrupt the Alcaraz-Sinner stronghold in the years ahead. Guess what?

At the top of her list was an American who had been steadily turning heads. “I really like how Ben Shelton plays. He broke into the top ten this year, and I hope he continues to improve.” Currently ranked ninth in the world, Shelton had a win-loss record of 40-24 this season, and his only title triumph came at the Canadian Open. But he has made quite a few deep runs this year. Petrova sees his breakthrough not as a ceiling, but as a starting point.

Although his record against both Carlos Alcaraz (0-3) and Jannik Sinner (1-8) isn’t that good, if the American continues to refine his game, Nadia Petrova believes Shelton could really become a genuine problem for the Tour’s top two. Having said that, she also mentioned a few other names…

Petrova refused to overlook consistency and grit - qualities embodied by Alex de Minaur. The Aussie has built his career on speed, defense, and relentless pressure, often frustrating bigger hitters into errors. “I also wouldn't rule out De Minaur; he's a great player and could reach a major final,” she added. And then came the wildcard pick.

Alexander Bublik, a player as unpredictable as he is talented, earned Petrova’s attention for a simple reason: his ceiling. “There's Bublik, who can beat anyone if he's motivated.” If motivation aligns with discipline, Petrova suggests, Bublik could be a nightmare draw even for Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

And then, finally, Petrova brought the conversation back to a familiar name - one who has already proven he can win on the biggest stage. “Of course, Daniil Medvedev. He's already won a Grand Slam and reached a final. He has a new coach and can certainly achieve much more.”

For now, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner remain the benchmark, the twin peaks every contender must climb. But if Petrova’s assessment is any indication, the chase pack is sharpening its tools - and the next challenge to the throne may not be far away. In men’s tennis, dominance is earned daily, and history suggests it’s only a matter of time before someone knocks loudly on the door. But what do other tennis experts have in their picks?

Who else could challenge Carlos Alcaraz & Jannik Sinner?

For now, the men’s game has a very clear center of gravity. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner sit there, pulling everything toward them, setting a level that feels just out of reach for the rest of the Tour. Even those who have spent their lives around elite tennis admit it.

Alcaraz and Sinner are considered to be the two best tennis players of their generation, each winning multiple major titles - Alcaraz with six and Sinner with four - and both reaching the world number one ranking. According to their peer, Matteo Arnaldi, “Alcaraz and Sinner have a consistency that the rest of the Top 10 lack, but in addition to their incredible consistency, in my opinion, they have something extra they can bring to their game in crucial moments that others don't have right now.”

Although Arnaldi admitted that Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, and many others have come close during matches, he believes they don’t win two or three tournaments in a row. Consistency has been a major factor that has hindered the formation of the new ‘Big 3.’ But what do other experts have to say on this?

“Can anyone really come into the [Alcaraz-Sinner] conversation? Right now, I don't see it,” tennis legend Tim Henman said in a conversation on ausopen.com. However, he also added, “[But] a year is a long time in life and certainly in sport. And the one person I would love to be in that conversation is Jack Draper again, because there's no doubt in the first half of 2025, he was in the conversation, the way that he beat Alcaraz in Indian Wells, and he made the final in Madrid. He was playing great tennis.”

He asked the fans to be a bit patient with Draper as he recovers from an injury. But not only Henman, even Britain’s Davis Cup captain, Leon Smith, also has high hopes for Draper. “He can beat them (Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner) - we've seen it before in one-off matches.” But who else? Well, Henman also sees America’s Taylor Fritz as one of the most “likeliest to close the gap” with Alcaraz and Sinner.

According to Mark Petchey, Canadian star Felix Auger-Aliassime has all the big weapons to challenge these two. There are a few more youngsters also in the list of those throwing some major challenges to both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, and that list starts with Joao Fonseca and Jakub Mensik.

But we must not forget the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Although he has failed to win a major title in the last couple of years, as per Rusedski, we must remember, “Despite barely playing, he was still the third-best player on the planet this year, and he still wants to keep going.”

Tennis doesn’t wait for invitations. It waits for someone brave enough, stubborn enough, and talented enough to force their way into the conversation. But who, according to you, can become the real threat to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance in the next few years?
