Carlos Alcaraz Quips He’s ‘Playing Roger Federer Every Round’ After Gritty Indian Wells Victory

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz is no stranger to opponents elevating their game when they face him. Yet even the Spaniard couldn’t help but laugh at the constant challenge after battling through another demanding test at the BNP Paribas Open.

Following a gritty comeback victory over Arthur Rinderknech on Monday, Alcaraz joked that every match lately feels like facing one of the sport’s greatest icons. “I just sometimes get tired [of] playing Roger Federer every round,” he quipped in his post-match press conference. “Sometimes it just feels they’re playing an insane level.”

The contest turned into a stern examination for the top seed. Ranked No. 28, Rinderknech arrived determined to swing freely against the tournament favorite and delivered a sharp opening set.

The Frenchman’s aggressive approach paid dividends early. He fired a flurry of winners and maintained a strong first-serve percentage, consistently placing pressure on Alcaraz’s return games. The Spaniard managed to force a tiebreak after a tightly contested set, but the momentum briefly swung in Rinderknech’s favor.

Despite letting two advantages slip in the breaker, the Frenchman seized his opportunity when Alcaraz misfired on a crucial forehand, allowing Rinderknech to edge the set and stun the crowd. The early setback, however, seemed to sharpen Alcaraz’s focus.

The second set began with another twist as Rinderknech grabbed an early break. But the World No. 1 immediately responded, reestablishing control with his trademark combination of heavy groundstrokes and relentless movement.

Once Alcaraz settled into rhythm, the balance of the match shifted. He began dictating rallies, breaking the Frenchman repeatedly across the next two sets while tightening his own service games. By the decider, the Spaniard looked fully in command, producing a flawless stretch on serve and racing to the finish line to seal the comeback victory in just under two and a half hours.

While the win extended his impressive unbeaten start to the year, the match once again highlighted the reality Carlos Alcaraz faces as the top-ranked player in the world.

Alcaraz admitted that facing opponents who raise their level has become a familiar theme in his matches. According to the Spaniard, players often feel they must deliver their very best tennis to stand a chance against him. “If they play that level every match, they should be higher in the ranking,” Alcaraz noted. “But it is something I think about. All I can do is accept it and try to impose my style on the match.”

The 22-year-old explained that instead of dwelling on the pressure, he focuses on adjusting tactically - limiting his opponent’s aggression while gradually asserting his own tempo. Still, he acknowledged that the phenomenon may simply come with being the player everyone wants to beat. “I feel like I have a target on my back,” Alcaraz added. “Maybe they feel that if they don’t play that kind of tennis, they can’t win.”

The victory kept Carlos Alcaraz’s flawless start (14-0) to the 2026 campaign intact. His run has already been highlighted by major titles at the Australian Open and the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, reinforcing his dominance at the top of the men’s game. With momentum firmly on his side, Alcaraz now turns his attention to another intriguing challenge in the desert.

Who will Carlos Alcaraz face in the R16 of the 2026 Indian Wells?

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz continues his quest for another title in the California desert as he prepares for the Round of 16 at the BNP Paribas Open. After battling through the opening rounds, the Spaniard now faces a familiar rival as the tournament enters its decisive stages.

Awaiting the top seed in the fourth round is Casper Ruud, who booked his place in the pre-quarterfinals with a comeback win over Valentin Vacherot. Ruud dropped the opening set but regrouped to secure a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory, setting up a highly anticipated clash with the Spaniard.

The upcoming encounter will mark the seventh meeting between the two players. Alcaraz has largely dominated the matchup so far, leading the head-to-head series 5-1. Their rivalry also includes a memorable showdown in the final of the 2022 US Open, where the Spaniard prevailed in four sets to capture his maiden major title.

Ruud’s lone victory against Alcaraz came at the ATP Finals in 2024, where the Norwegian produced an impressive straight-sets performance. As they prepare to meet again, Ruud will hope to recreate that level against the World No. 1.

While the matchup promises fireworks, attention briefly shifted to Carlos Alcaraz’s fitness during his day off at Indian Wells. According to tennis analyst José Morón, the Spaniard opted to skip a scheduled practice session to focus on recovery work.

Morón shared the update on social media, explaining that Alcaraz had initially reserved a training slot but ultimately chose not to push himself physically. “Alcaraz is taking care of his ankle on his day off at Indian Wells. The player from Murcia had a training slot reserved in Indian Wells, but in the end, they decided not to push it and chose to rest and do recovery work instead,” Morón wrote.

With the tournament schedule tightening, the decision appears to be precautionary. Should Alcaraz defeat Ruud, he would face consecutive match days, with the quarterfinals scheduled immediately afterward. Managing physical strain at this stage could therefore prove crucial.

Carlos Alcaraz is chasing a third Indian Wells crown this week, along with another milestone at the ATP Masters 1000 level. A victory over Ruud would move him one step closer to that goal and open the door to a challenging path in the later rounds.

If the Spaniard advances, a possible quarterfinal meeting with Cameron Norrie could await. Beyond that, the semifinals may feature one of several heavyweights, including Novak Djokovic, defending champion Jack Draper, or Daniil Medvedev.

For fans, the dream scenario would be a long-awaited final showdown between Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner - a rivalry often dubbed ‘Sincaraz.’ Tennis followers narrowly missed that blockbuster clash earlier this season, making the prospect of it unfolding in Indian Wells even more enticing.

But before looking too far ahead, Carlos Alcaraz must first overcome Ruud, a player who knows exactly what it takes to challenge the World No. 1 on the big stage. Who’s your pick in that epic R16 clash?
