Daniil Medvedev Ends 882-Day Title Drought With a Tribute to His Family

For 882 days, Daniil Medvedev had felt the sting of near misses and the weight of unfulfilled expectations. Fans and critics alike wondered if the Russian star, known for his relentless baseline game and ice-cold composure, could ever find his winning rhythm again. But in Almaty, Medvedev reminded the tennis world why he remains one of the sport’s most resilient competitors.
Lifting the trophy after a hard-fought final against the Frenchman, Corentin Moutet (7-5, 4-6, 6-3), Medvedev’s celebration was more than a personal triumph—it was a family affair. Shortly after securing the winning point, he walked towards his wife and daughters, who were cheering for him from the stands, and gave them a hug. The road back to the winner’s circle hadn’t been easy, and this brief heartwarming moment after the match tells you how much this win meant to him.
Daniil Medvedev has two daughters, Alisa, born in October 2022, and Victoria, born in January, with his wife, Daria Medvedeva. And a month ago, after his win in the first round of the China Open, he made a very interesting statement about balancing his personal life with his professional life. Medvedev said, “I definitely love my two daughters; I love my wife. It's not a problem for me. Even if I play tennis worse because I have a second daughter, I'm happy about it, and I don't care. For sure, I was concerned. I'm still concerned. I'm trying to find a way to show everyone that I'm capable of doing big things again.” Now, after winning his first title since Rome in 2023, he yet again shed light on how much his family's support means to him. Medvedev said, “I want to thank my family. It's the first time that I won a tournament with my two daughters and my wife together, so to get a title, it's really nice. This title is in honor of my 2nd daughter, Victoria, because the first title I got when my first daughter, Alisa, was born was for her, so this one's for Victoria.”
This year, Daniil Medvedev has played 60 matches and won just 39 out of them. Although he made quite a few deep runs this year (including the Terra Wortmann Open final), he had won just one match at the Grand Slams this year and also suffered a meltdown at the US Open. As things stand, this win will give him a massive boost in confidence, which could help him wrap up the year on a positive note.
As of now, Medvedev has two tournaments confirmed for the rest of the 2025 season, i.e., the Vienna Open and the Paris Masters. Although it’s quite tough, this win in Almaty has also boosted his faint Nitto ATP Finals hopes. The 2020 year-end champion is now up three spots to 12th in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, trailing eighth-placed Lorenzo Musetti by 875 points. What else did Medvedev say after this title triumph?
Daniil Medvedev shares his thoughts about a “funny” stat
Daniil Medvedev’s inconsistency on the ATP Tour and struggles with his serve in particular have led to his way out of the Top 10 list in the singles rankings. But on Almaty courts, his precision and tactical mastery were on full display, reminding everyone why he has been a fixture among the elite. From the pressures of maintaining a top ranking to the relentless grind of the ATP Tour, Medvedev faced doubts, injuries, and a lingering hunger for success. Yet, his perseverance, coupled with love and encouragement from home, fueled his comeback.
With his recent win over Moutet, he has now joined Novak Djokovic in the list of active players to be able to reach 40+ career ATP Tour finals. In fact, he is now also just the second active male player to win 19 hard-court titles, joining Novak Djokovic (71).
