Jannik Sinner Faces Tricky Path to Australian Open Title Defense With Novak Djokovic Looming in Semifinals

Jan 16, 2026, 1:40 PM CUT

Two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner will begin his quest for a third-straight AO crown with a first-round matchup against Frenchman Hugo Gaston, as confirmed during Thursday’s draw ceremony in Melbourne. The Italian enters the tournament as one of the top contenders once again, but the road ahead is anything but simple.

Sinner, who lifted the trophy in both 2024 and 2025, is aware of the challenges ahead. “The draw is ‌very difficult; it doesn’t matter who you play. We are the best players in the world, and the way is very, very long.” His route to the semifinals, where Novak Djokovic potentially awaits, is lined with powerful hitters, rising stars, and experienced seeds who have troubled top players in the past.

Jannik Sinner opens against Gaston, a crafty left-hander known for drop shots and variety, though the Italian holds a comfortable 2-0 record over him. A win would set up a second-round clash against either a qualifier, a lucky loser, or Australia’s own James Duckworth, all of whom have the ability to disrupt rhythm through aggressive first-strike tennis.

Things escalate quickly from there. In the third round, Sinner could face the rising star Joao Fonseca. The Italian has yet to face this 19-year-old Brazilian in his career. Fonseca’s explosive baseline game and fearless attitude have turned him into one of the most talked-about next-gen talents heading into 2026.

If Jannik Sinner advances, the fourth round brings even more hard-hitters. Possible opponents in the fourth round could be Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or his own compatriot Luciano Darderi. Even Karen Khachanov has a chance to meet Sinner in the fourth round.

The QF could bring a blockbuster clash with America’s Ben Shelton. Sinner has a 8-1 record the lefty known for his booming serves and big-match fearlessness. And then, if Sinner successfully navigates the early chaos, a potential SF against Novak Djokovic looms large. Djokovic, a ten-time AO champion, remains the most formidable figure in Melbourne. Sinner currently leads their H2H record by 6-4.

In the final, Jannik Sinner could face world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, who opens his campaign against Australia’s Adam Walton. Their rivalry has become central to the sport in recent years, with each player pushing the other to new levels. Currently, the Spaniard has a 10-6 lead against Sinner.

With the draw stacked from top to bottom, Sinner’s path to a third straight AO title is riddled with potential stumbling blocks. But even Carlos Alcaraz has been handed a tricky draw this year.

Who has got a tougher draw at the 2026 AO: Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz?

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner arrive at the 2026 AO chasing very different chapters of tennis history. Alcaraz, back at world no. 1, is aiming to become the youngest player ever to complete the Career Grand Slam - a feat that would break Don Budge’s 1938 record by several months. Sinner, meanwhile, is attempting something equally rare: a three-peat in Melbourne. But as the draw was revealed on Thursday, it quickly became clear that their paths toward history are far from equal.

Former US Open finalist Greg Rusedski believes there’s no debate about who faces the more challenging fortnight. “[Jannik] Sinner has got the harder of the two sections, no question about it. [Novak] Djokovic, [Ben] Shelton, [Karen] Khachanov, [Joao] Fonseca, I think [Carlos] Alcaraz has the better route to the final.”

Carlos Alcaraz’s road to QF (at least) looks relatively easier. But in the QF, he could face Alex de Minaur before setting up a possible clash against last year’s finalist Alexander Zverev and then eventually taking on Jannik Sinner (possibly) in the final.

Amid all these, tennis legend Rod Laver shared his bold prediction for the 2026 AO. According to him, “It’s extremely difficult to predict, which is a great situation for tennis to be in. So many players could take it. Of course, Sinner and Alcaraz are top of the list as their rivalry grows. Sinner continues to strengthen his game and is the two-time defending champion, but if the conditions are hot, I’d say Carlos has an edge, and his desire to win is going to be higher than ever because he hasn’t won it before.”

Laver has picked the Spaniard. But do you think Jannik Sinner can defend his title yet again this year? Share your thoughts in the comment box.
