Joao Fonseca Joins Novak Djokovic in an Elite List and Earns “Next Nole” Praise From His Opponent

The echoes of applause still lingered in Basel’s St. Jakobshalle as Joao Fonseca raised his arms to the crowd, his eyes glimmering with disbelief and pride. Shortly after becoming the fourth youngest finalist at the Swiss Indoors (joining the likes of his ‘idol’ Roger Federer), the 19-year-old rising star has now become the second-youngest champion in the tournament's history after Jim Courier’s heroics in 1989. But this wasn’t just another title—it was a moment that marked his arrival among the sport’s elite.
Coming to his growing habit of breaking records, Fonseca became the first Brazilian to win a title above the ATP 250 level since Gustavo Kuerten’s Cincinnati Open triumph in 2001. With this 6-3, 6-4 victory over Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Fonseca also became the third youngest player to win an ATP 500 title since the series began in 2009. But that’s not all! Thanks to his Swiss Indoors victory, he has now climbed up to 28th place in the singles ranking.
And, guess what? At 19 years and 2 months, Joao Fonseca has cracked the Top 30 of the rankings at the same age as three of the ‘Big 4’ in men’s tennis.
| Roger Federer | 19 years, 2 months |
| Novak Djokovic | 19 years, 2 months |
| Andy Murray | 19 years, 2 months |
| Joao Fonseca | 19 years, 2 months |
So, seeing him secure a place in this elite list, fans may wonder if surely tennis is now in safe hands, right? After this epic duel, which lasted 1 hour and 25 minutes, Fonseca’s opponent, Davidovich, couldn’t stop himself from showering praise on this teenage sensation. He said, “You played unbelievable tennis today. You are the person of this sport. You have a bright future for sure. You’re gonna be the next Nole to beat Carlos and Jannik for sure.”
Just like Djokovic in his teenage years, Fonseca has shown a rare blend of athleticism and mental grit. His uncanny ability to stay calm in tense moments has already begun to separate him from his peers. Over the past few months, the youngster’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric—a blend of passion, precision, and purpose driving his ascent.
This was his 28th win of 2025 and also the second title of the season in the ATP Tour (after the Argentina Open). Joao Fonseca is now also the fourth youngest player to win his first ATP 500 tournament since 2000, joining the likes of Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, and Carlos Alcaraz on that list at 19 years and two months. But what did this talented Brazilian say after winning the title at Swiss Indoors?
Joao Fonseca dedicates his title to a special person in his life
Joao Fonseca was born to Roberta and Christiano Fonseca in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He grew up playing multiple sports, including soccer, jiu-jitsu, and judo. But it didn’t take long for his parents to realize their son’s enormous potential in the racket sport. Fonseca started playing tennis at the age of four. Seeing his enormous talent, fans on social media often used to refer to him with nicknames such as ‘Little Sinner’ or ‘Another Guga,’ in reference to Gustavo Kuerten.
Now, as he breaks into the higher echelons of men’s tennis, everyone has started wondering if he’s the only missing piece from the new Big 3, which already features Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Well, speaking on this topic, different tennis experts shared their thoughts on the same. For example, in August this year, during an interview with Tennis 365, Serena Williams’ childhood coach, Rick Macci, hailed Fonseca as “the chosen one” and also claimed that he believes the Brazilian could really threaten the dominance of Alcaraz and Sinner.
Earlier this year, while speaking on a similar topic during the ‘Nothing Major’ podcast, American former pro Sam Querrey said that he thinks Joao Fonseca is not too far away from throwing a major challenge towards the current top 2. He also added, “He (Fonseca) is my favorite player to watch play tennis right now; I love watching him play. I’m excited to tune in and see him play for the rest of his life!”
Later on, other tennis bigwigs like John Isner and Luke Saville also admitted that the Brazilian star could possibly be the next challenger to ‘Sincaraz’ dominance. According to Andy Roddick, Fonseca is already the player who is the closest to Alcaraz and Sinner when it comes to creating something out of nothing on the court. Incredible talent!

He added yet another feather to his cap with this title triumph at the Swiss Indoors. Can you imagine what it means to him to win a title at the place where he watched his idol, Roger Federer, lift the same title 10 times in his career?
So, after beating Davidovich, Joao Fonseca said, “To my family, I’m gonna talk but I can’t look at you guys. They believed in me since I was a kid. It’s a pleasure to be your kid. It’s a pleasure. We keep going. It’s the first ATP 500 but not gonna be the last, hopefully.” He further added, “I watched on TV Roger playing this tournament since I was young and winning like 10 times if I’m not mistaken. It’s a pleasure playing on this court and playing here for the first time. For sure it won’t be the last time.”
Having said that, he also congratulated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for having such an amazing week and then went on to dedicate this title to his mom. He revealed how his parents had just come from Brazil to watch him play. Initially, they had plans to go to Paris, but then they changed their flight and came here almost an hour before the match.
Speaking on his family’s incredible support, Fonseca added, “They were the ones who believed in me. I was thinking about going to University. They were like, ‘It’s your choice. We’re gonna be there to support you no matter what you choose.’ I wanna thank them. Since I was young, my mom traveled with me. Since I was 11, I only traveled with her. This title is for her.” This was truly a proud moment for the Fonsecas!
But wait a minute! Is Joao Fonseca now planning to follow in the footsteps of Carlos Alcaraz? Well, the answer seems to be a big yes at the moment! Because the youngster revealed that he had made a promise to shave his head if he wins the title here. Remember, Alcaraz did the same thing before entering the 2025 US Open?
Well, be it breaking records or coming up with new haircuts, it seems this teenager has already set up his mind to follow what the best of the game does! Do you think Fonseca can become a real threat for both Alcaraz and Sinner in 2026?
