Novak Djokovic Breaks Down Spain and Italy’s Davis Cup Hopes Amid Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s Absence

As the Davis Cup stage lit up once again, Novak Djokovic walked into the mixed zone wearing the calm of a man who’s seen every twist this sport can offer. Yet beneath that calm was an unmistakable spark - the spark of someone who knows that this year’s competition has thrown up a storyline nobody expected.

Two of the biggest young guns, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, were missing. Two nations: Spain and Italy, suddenly found themselves without their brightest stars. After helping his team win titles for two consecutive times, Sinner said that he prefers to prepare for the next season instead of taking part in this iconic team event. “The goal is to start off on the right foot in Australia,” said the Italian. But for Alcaraz? Well, it was his hamstring injury that ruled him out of the competition.

But as the questions flew toward Novak Djokovic about whether their absence would impact their teams or not, the 24-time Grand Slam champion didn’t see doom or decline. He saw possibilities. Djokovic paused, gathering his thoughts like he often does before delivering a backhand winner. Then came the insight delivered with the clarity only Djokovic can bring. He spoke about how this tournament often offers surprises and went on to speak a little about Germany, France, and Belgium as real challengers before moving onto the other two nations. “You know Spain [and] Italy obviously without Sinner [and] Alcaraz, but they still have incredible fields, deep fields with players and teams that can win any match, singles and doubles,” said Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic’s Serbia failed to reach the Elite 8 this year, so just like Alcaraz and Sinner, he is also absent from on-court action in Bologna. But for the Serbian superstar, the beauty of this tournament has always been its unpredictability - a stage where the world’s biggest stars sit shoulder-to-shoulder ‌with hungry challengers ready to swing their way into history.

Speaking more about the competition, he said, “I think it’s quite open, you know there are some favorites, but maybe slight favorites, not really clear favorites, so it is going to be interesting to see who ends up with the trophy at the end of the week.”

On one side, Spain is bidding for its first Davis Cup title in six years, while Italy is looking for its third consecutive title. Surely, the addition of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner would have added a different dimension to the competition. But that’s how it’s and now we’ll be seeing them back in the Tour altogether at the AO. Can Novak Djokovic come out all guns blazing and take down these two in Melbourne in what could possibly be his last attempt at one of his favorite Slams?

Serena Williams’ ex-coach analyzes Novak Djokovic’s chances at the 2026 AO in the ‘Sincaraz’ era

In the twilight glow of Novak Djokovic’s astonishing career, every new season feels like the turning of a page in a story the tennis world refuses to stop reading. And as the 2026 AO looms - a tournament he has ruled like no other (10 title triumphs) - one voice from the sport’s inner circle believes that the 24-time Grand Slam champion could throw up a real challenge in Melbourne.

Djokovic’s last Grand Slam success came way back at the 2023 US Open. Ever since then, it has been all about the new generation stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. But in a previous interview, Rennae Stubbs, a former doubles star and also one of tennis’ most respected analysts, made a very interesting prediction.

She said that she believes the Australian Open could be Novak Djokovic’s last major tournament. According to her, winning the title in Melbourne and hanging up his racket would be a perfect ending to this extraordinary career.

Recently, Stubbs also named him as one of the real contenders other than Sinner and Alcaraz. During a conversation on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, she said, “I do think that Novak is setting his sights [on Australia]. I don’t think he cared about the ATP Finals; clearly, he didn’t play it. I think he is going to put all this time and effort into busting his a— one last time to win down in Australia. I think he is the only one who can rock the apple cart for Jannik and Carlos.”

Carlos Alcaraz has always struggled in this tournament. His best record has been reaching the QFs twice (2024, 2025). This year, Novak Djokovic defeated him in the QF match in a four-set thriller. But unfortunately for the Serb, he was forced to give a mid-match walkover to Alexander Zverev in the semis. On the other side, Jannik Sinner has won the title twice (2024, 2025).

Speaking more on that, she added, “Carlos has never made the finals there. Novak crushed him last year. There was one set which was really good, but overall Novak was the better player, so I think Novak goes in there going, I know I can potentially get to a semi and final there, and I know I may have one more last grasp. I don’t think he beats someone like Jannik on that court. I think Jannik is just too good on that court. But it might be the one place that Novak can.”
