Roger Federer’s Ex-Coach Tips the Scale in the Fierce Carlos Alcaraz–Jannik Sinner Battle

In the quiet corners of the tennis world - where legends linger and new greats are constantly evaluated - few voices carry as much weight as Ivan Ljubicic’s. The former coach of tennis great Roger Federer has watched generations rise and fall, witnessing firsthand the birth of rivalries that shape eras. And now, as the tennis landscape rebuilds itself after the ‘Big 3’ era. Ljubicic sees a new battle taking center stage: Carlos Alcaraz vs. Jannik Sinner. But who’s ahead?
In a recent interview with Puntodebreak, the Croatian legend spoke about two of the brightest stars of the current generation. This year, we saw both Alcaraz and Sinner bagging a total of 14 titles (including two Grand Slam titles each). According to Ljubicic, this duopoly is going to continue, as he feels both these players keep improving and keep adding new dimensions to their game. Their experience in important matches and under pressure is what keeps them growing, says the tennis legend.
Although Ljubicic doesn’t expect any changes in terms of new names emerging, he feels that someone could put up some stellar performances here and there in the next two to three years. But can they do it throughout the year? No, says the Croatian. Coming to the comparison of both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, he added, “They're two different players, two distinct personalities, so it's great to see that contrast every time they face each other. The numbers say that Carlos is a little ahead of Jannik; he's also a bit younger, but it's fascinating and fantastic for tennis to have a rivalry like this right after the Big Three.”
Those words carried a familiar echo - like the early whispers about Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic when they were still carving their path to immortality. But this time, Ljubicic was highlighting more about the flair of a young warrior who has already proven that the spotlight doesn’t just find him - he owns it.
Since Ivan Ljubicic has seen the Swiss Maestro closely, what does he have to say about the question that often pops up in the tennis world: Is Carlos Alcaraz the closest thing to Roger Federer today?
In reply to this, he said, “In terms of tennis… maybe. Yes. In terms of personality and character, I think they are completely different, and I don’t think you can separate one from the other. That said, right now Carlos is the most creative player, the player who generates the most enthusiasm on a tennis court. Even so, I think it’s still too early to talk about these things (smiles).” Having said that, Ljubicic further added, “I think he generates those emotions in tennis fans, in people who love this sport; he generates something different. There was a time, five or ten years ago, when we were afraid that all the players would become the same. He’s the one who has brought a different perspective through his tennis. He’s fantastic.”

Coming from Federer’s former mentor, this wasn’t casual commentary - it was a coronation of sorts. Ljubicic was declaring that the sport has found its new compass points. And interestingly, he tipped the scale. Slightly… but decisively. Carlos Alcaraz, according to him, stands just a touch ahead. But how do other tennis legends compare these two superstars in the modern era?
Tennis legends shine a light on what truly separates Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
In the ever-evolving landscape of men’s tennis, two names continue to rise above the chatter - Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Their rivalry is fast becoming the heartbeat of the sport, a modern-day duel between two young athletes with contrasting personalities, styles, and philosophies. And now, tennis legends themselves are weighing in on what truly separates these two generational talents.
During a recent interaction on The David Rubenstein Show, tennis legend Maria Sharapova was asked about on-court coaching. Interestingly, in reply to that question, she drew examples of both Alcaraz and Sinner. She highlighted the difference in their personalities by saying, “Some players love it - they openly communicate with their coaches. I know Alcaraz does it very often, whereas others, I think Sinner does it less often.”
In a previous interview on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis podcast, she revealed that she is “always rooting for” Jannik Sinner because of his humble approach towards the game. Is he a Sinner fan, then? Well, if we go back a little, in 2023, during another conversation, Sharapova said, “Carlos is incredible.” She even drew a comparison of his fighting spirit to that of the great Spaniard, Rafael Nadal.
Even Andre Agassi once spoke about the difference between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. According to the American, Alcaraz’s affinity for the natural surfaces neutralizes Sinner’s firepower and movement. He said, “The one thing that really impresses me about (Alcaraz) is when I watch him on the slippery grass or the slippery clay, his speed diminishes less than the other fast guys. It’s almost like he’s a spaceship going against normal airplanes or something.”
He highlighted Carlos Alcaraz’s incredible strength, balance, movement on grass and also his athleticism and said, “When you start looking at these areas, like clay or grass, I give him (Alcaraz) a little bit of the edge—assuming he’s healthy and feeling good.”
As legends like Sharapova and Agassi continue to dissect their differences, the tennis world watches with growing fascination. Because in these contrasts lies the beauty of their rivalry: the raw emotion of Alcaraz against the icy calm of Sinner; the Spanish flair set against Italian finesse. If Alcaraz is unstoppable on natural surfaces, Sinner does the same heroics in the indoor tournaments, and we’ve seen it this year as well (31 consecutive wins on indoor hard courts).
What are your thoughts about the comparisons between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner? Let us know who is slightly ahead of the other and also mention why.
