Stan Wawrinka Returns to a Prestigious Tennis Event After Almost Two Decades

Nov 28, 2025, 1:40 PM CUT

For nearly two decades, fans in New Zealand have waited for the day they’d see Stan Wawrinka (3x Grand Slam champion, former world number 3) walk back onto their courts. In 2026, that long anticipation will finally end. At 40, the Swiss superstar is now gearing up for a return that blends nostalgia, resilience, and the enduring fire that has defined his remarkable journey through the sport.

This tournament holds a special place in the heart of every tennis fan. It’s more than just a preparatory stage for the Australian Open. The tournament, which was first founded in 1886, holds a rich history, and the ASB Tennis Center has witnessed the rise and fall of several superstars. This tournament will take place from January 12 to 18, 2026, and recently the tournament organizers shared a post on their official X handle, announcing he arrival of ‘Stan The Man.’

They wrote, “Stan THE MAN 😤 One of the game’s true greats (that backhand) and triple Grand Slam champ — the legendary Stan Wawrinka is returning to Auckland after nearly 20 years.” Stan Wawrinka made his first appearance at the Auckland Open almost 18 years ago. That time, he lost to Mario Ancic (former world number 7) in the semis by straight sets.

So, when the Swiss arrives in Auckland next year, it will mark his first appearance at the event in 19 years. Reacting to this historic moment, the tournament director, Nicolas Lamperin, said, “We are thrilled to welcome Stan back to Auckland. His presence adds prestige to the event, and fans will be excited to see him play here again.”

Currently ranked 158th in the world, Stan Wawrinka played his last match on November 5 at the Helenic Championship. He was defeated by Lorenzo Musetti in that R16 clash in three sets.

Wawrinka didn’t have a great season this year. He had a win-loss record of just 4-13, and he failed to win even a single title in 2025. But as he inches closer to what many believe are the final chapters of his career, Wawrinka’s decision to add Auckland back to his schedule speaks volumes about his connection to the sport. Is this what keeps him going even at this age?

Stan Wawrinka reveals what really motivates him to play even at 40

There is a certain magic that follows Stan Wawrinka each time he walks into a stadium. It isn’t the roar of the crowd or the nostalgia of three Grand Slam trophies shining in memory - it’s something simpler, something purer. Seeing him continue to lace up his shoes when most of his contemporaries have hung theirs up, fans can’t help but wonder: what keeps Wawrinka going?

Once through a heartfelt tweet, the Swiss gave the answer, “Passion – a strong liking, desire, or devotion to an activity. When I started playing tennis at 8 years old, it was just a game. Then it became my passion. My dream was to one day become a professional tennis player. I know that as an athlete, people like to think they know when it’s time for you to stop. People believe that when you get older, when you don’t play at the same level, don’t have the same ranking or same result, you should stop. As much as I’m a competitor, as much as I love to win, it’s not always about that. Passion is not always about the results – it’s about pushing your limits.”

He knows that it’s pretty hard for him to win any more major titles or be in the Top 10, but Stan Wawrinka loves the process of always pushing his own limits. He further added, “I know the end of my career will come one day, but until then, I will always give my best fight.”

In an era where longevity has become as celebrated as brilliance, Stan Wawrinka remains one of tennis’ most inspiring examples of playing for the right reasons. Not numbers. Not history. Not expectations. Just love. Just passion. Just Stan being Stan.

And as long as that fire burns - even quietly, even stubbornly - fans can expect him to keep stepping onto the court, ready for one more fight. For the next year, his plan is to play some tournaments and enjoy it to the fullest, as he knows that “the end is coming.”
