England Back Young Pair to Challenge Malaysia in High-Stakes Thomas Cup Opener

England misses out on Ben Lane and Sean Vendy for the Thomas Cup, but coach Tan Kian Meng has a different trick up his sleeve.
England will send Alex Green and Zach Russ to face Malaysia's world No. 2 duo, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. And coach Tan Kian Meng thinks they can put on a strong show.
"I really hope that this pair will be able to challenge Aaron-Wooi Yik if they are fielded. They did well to upset Danish top pair in the European Championships and are looking confident."
That's because Green and Russ are coming off a strong European Championship performance. In the quarterfinals, they shocked Denmark's top seeds Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, but they lost in the semifinals.
On paper, though, Malaysia is still in charge. They can change their doubles lineup, which could give Aaron and Soh a break while they try out other combinations like Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun or Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
Kian Meng is getting ready for a unique match against his home country. He is a coach for England along with Chris Adcock. “It’s unfortunate that we face Malaysia, but I will stay professional. We are determined to put up a good fight,” he added.
Singles' Depth Gives Malaysia the Edge Despite England Fighting
England's singles lineup is more diverse, but they will have a hard time against Malaysia's stronger team.
Harry Huang is the captain of the English team, which is ranked 62nd in the world. He is helped by Cholan Kayan, Nadeem Dalvi, and Kalyan Manoj.
Malaysia is the favorite to win the tie because they have more depth in both singles and doubles. But the Thomas Cup format doesn't allow for complacency.
England's goal is to stay competitive and put Malaysia under a lot of stress. Malaysia has a clear goal: start strong, avoid surprises, and build momentum early in the campaign.
