Taylor Fritz Leads American Surge in Ace Race – but Where Are Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner?

Sep 27, 2025, 1:30 PM CUT

The thud of the ball echoed through the stadiums in 2015, when a young Taylor Fritz first stepped onto the court as a tennis pro—it showcased the cannon-like precision of his serve. Fast forward to 2025, and that very weapon has elevated him into rarefied company—Fritz now leads the ace charts of the season. But there is a twist in the tale!

He’s not alone in that list. Alongside him, three other Americans have muscled their way into the top 10 of the Ace Race. For a nation that once prided itself on booming deliveries from the likes of Pete Sampras and Andy Roddick, this surge feels like a rekindling of tradition. From John Isner’s retirement, many wondered who would inherit the mantle of ‘serve machine.’ Well, here’s the answer:

Rank (in number of aces in 2025)NameNumber of AcesMatches
1Taylor Fritz68558
2Reilly Opelka66941
3Jakub Mensik60843
4Alexander Bublik56347
5Felix Auger-Aliassime55453
6Ben Shelton53755
7Alexander Zverev47462
8Brandon Nakashima45351
9Andrey Rublev44753
10Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard43333

Seeing this list, one may wonder, where are Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner? Well, both sit comfortably at the summit of the ATP Rankings, yet neither has cracked the ace leaderboard. Alcaraz sits at 13th place with 403 aces in 67 matches, while Sinner is down to 35th (267 aces in 42 matches).

For those wondering why they are not placed in the Top 10, their games are built differently. Alcaraz thrives on variety, on pulling his opponents wide with angles and dizzying pace. Sinner, on the other hand, has developed one of the most reliable and penetrating ground games in the sport, often relying on depth and precision rather than sheer serving thunder.

But having said that, we surely expect Sinner to be at least in the Top 20. His serves have been a major struggle in his game recently, and time and again this year we saw him taking some time out to put full focus on improving his serves. His serve looked below par during the US Open. However, the good thing is that the Italian has managed to bring up some better numbers in his recent R32 match against Marin Cilic at the China Open.

So, this shows us how Jannik Sinner’s effort to develop his weakness into his strength has taken up a rapid pace nowadays. But having said that, their (Alcaraz and Sinner) absence from the Top 10 in that list underscores a fascinating dynamic: tennis’ future stars don’t necessarily need a barrage of aces to dominate. Instead, they’ve redefined success with all-court adaptability, using rallies rather than aces.

Hence, the 2025 Ace Race paints a broader picture of two distinct philosophies shaping men’s tennis. On one side, Taylor Fritz and other Americans are reviving their traditional strength, turning serves into shortcut points. On the other hand, Alcaraz and Sinner symbolize a modern and grinding brilliance.

But looking at their overall tennis, how does Taylor Fritz look at his rivalry with both these superstars in men’s tennis?

Amid sheer dominance from ‘Sincaraz,’ Taylor Fritz makes his intentions pretty clear

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner remain the players to beat on the ATP Tour, having continued their dominance in the 2025 season. These two have shared two Grand Slam titles each this season, and in fact, both of them have now almost cemented their places in the Top 2 of the singles ranking as well.

Their sheer brilliance throughout the season even made the 24-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic, admit, “I lost three out of four Slams in semis against these guys, so they’re just too good, you know, playing on a really high level…Best of five makes it very, very difficult for me to play them, particularly if it’s like the end stages of the Grand Slam.”

However, at the moment, Fritz is trailing Alcaraz by 1-3. He recently tasted his first win against the Spaniard at the 2025 Laver Cup. But against Sinner, the gap is a little bit more (1-4).

Speaking about these two, Fritz had earlier admitted that whenever he gets the chance to play against these two, he learns a lot from these matches. He gets to know what he needs to do to improve and get better. His “ultimate goal” is to win a Slam, and he knows very well now that in order to fulfill his dream, he needs to overcome these two massive hurdles.

After securing a 7-5,7-6(4) victory against Portugal’s Nuno Borges, Fritz yet again spoke on these two. He said, “I can't count on making it happen on maybe the one-off Slam where they have a random loss or something like that. I need to be able to play at a level where, on a day at a Grand Slam, I can be able to beat one of them and make it happen that way. I can't count on them not being there -- I feel like they're always going to be there.”

He further added, “I beat who I was supposed to beat to make it to the final, and it's becoming more apparent that that's probably not going to happen that often. So if you want to do it, you're going to have to go through one of those guys.”

Last year, Fritz came the closest to winning a Grand Slam title at the US Open, but Sinner defeated him. Do you think the American, who’s currently ranked 5th in the world, has the potential to outshine Sinner and Alcaraz and win a Grand Slam title in the upcoming years?
