Carlos Alcaraz Handed Tricky Draw at Indian Wells

Mar 3, 2026, 12:40 PM CUT

The draw for the 2026 BNP Paribas Open is out, and it promises fireworks in the Californian desert. Top seed Carlos Alcaraz finds himself navigating a stacked top half at Indian Wells, with the looming possibility of a blockbuster semi-final against No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic. The duo, who locked horns in a gripping Australian Open final earlier this year, could be on course for another high-stakes showdown - but only if they survive a minefield of early-round threats.

As the top seed, Alcaraz receives a first-round bye at the BNP Paribas Open, but his campaign could ignite immediately in the second round. The World No. 1 is set to face either former World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov or rising French lefty Terence Atmane.

Carlos Alcaraz currently leads the Bulgarian 4-2 in their H2H stats. While Alcaraz dismantled Dimitrov in last year’s fourth round in Indian Wells - dropping just two games - Dimitrov has a strong record in the desert, having reached the semi-finals in 2021 and the quarter-finals in 2022. Dimitrov’s comfort on these courts makes him far from a routine early opponent.

Atmane, meanwhile, represents the unknown danger. The 24-year-old is making his main-draw debut at Indian Wells after previously competing in qualifying. The Frenchman surged to a dream semi-final run in Cincinnati last season and now sits at a career-high No. 52 in the PIF ATP Rankings. Intriguingly, Atmane split his two previous Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings with Dimitrov, including a straight-sets win over the Bulgarian in Acapulco last week.

“It’s amazing. I’ll have hopefully two very good matches going on. We’re going to stay focused on the first one,” Atmane said. “The winner of one of us is going to be able to play Carlitos. It’s going to be very much up in the air for both of us, so it’s going to be very interesting.”

After that, Carlos Alcaraz could face Arthur Rinderknech and Casper Ruud in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. If the Spaniard overcomes those hurdles, either Alexander Bublik or Alex de Minaur could be his opponent in the QF before crossing paths with the likes of Novak Djokovic or the defending champion, Jack Draper, in the SF.

If everything goes right for Carlitos until the semis, he will once again have a chance to extend his lead over the world number 2, Jannik Sinner.

A win in the final of the Indian Wells will take his H2H record to 11-6 against the Italian. Can Alcaraz do it at Indian Wells this year?

Former ATP pro drops a bold prediction about Carlos Alcaraz’s chances at Indian Wells

There’s little doubt about who the favorites are heading into this year’s Indian Wells. But one former ATP star has now made his stance crystal clear. With the 2026 BNP Paribas Open around the corner, all eyes are on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner - the sport’s fiercest young rivals and the top contenders for the season’s first ATP Masters 1000 crown.

Alcaraz has been untouchable so far this season. The World No. 1 is yet to lose a match in 2026, having stormed to titles at the Australian Open and the Qatar Open. His level has only climbed higher, blending explosive athleticism with tactical maturity.

That form, combined with his proven success in the Californian desert, makes him the man to beat at the BNP Paribas Open.

Alcaraz is already a two-time champion at Indian Wells, going back-to-back in 2023 and 2024. The slower hard courts suit his heavy topspin and dynamic movement, allowing him to dominate baseline exchanges. His bid for a third straight title last year ended in the semifinals against eventual champion Jack Draper, but his overall record at the tournament remains formidable. Interestingly, his only other defeats at Indian Wells have come against legends - Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal, underlining how rarely he falters in the desert.

While Sinner has established himself as Alcaraz’s biggest rival, Indian Wells hasn’t been kind to him. It remains the only hard-court Masters 1000 where he has yet to reach a final. His best runs in 2023 and 2024 both ended at the hands of… You guessed it - Carlos Alcaraz.

The Italian enters this year’s tournament still searching for his first title of the season after losses to Novak Djokovic and rising star Jakub Mensik. While he has an opportunity to claw back ranking points, having missed Indian Wells last year due to his three-month suspension, the psychological edge may lie with his Spanish rival.

The reigning World No. 1 reached the semifinals in 2025, meaning he will drop 400 points at the start of this year’s event. However, with a commanding 3,150-point lead over Sinner, he is guaranteed to remain atop the rankings regardless of his result. On the other side, Sinner didn’t compete in Indian Wells last year, giving him a golden chance to close the gap. A deep run - especially combined with an early Alcaraz exit, could shrink the deficit significantly.

During a Tennis Channel segment, analysts were asked: Which Australian Open champion is more likely to win Indian Wells - Carlos Alcaraz or Elena Rybakina? Former ATP pro Sam Querrey didn’t hesitate.

“Carlos Alcaraz. His only real competition is Sinner, and even that has become more of a question as Alcaraz has considerably raised his level through title runs in Melbourne and Doha,” he said. He added that while Elena Rybakina is playing outstanding tennis on the women’s side, the depth in the WTA field makes her path trickier compared to Alcaraz’s situation on the ATP Tour.

Former Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard echoed the sentiment, pointing to Alcaraz’s unbeaten start to the year and his smart scheduling decisions. What are your thoughts on Carlos Alcaraz’s chances at the 2026 Indian Wells, though?
