Elena Rybakina Ousts Elina Svitolina to Set Up Blockbuster 2026 AO Final Rematch at Indian Wells

Mar 14, 2026, 12:40 PM CUT

The desert once again witnessed a statement performance from Elena Rybakina. Riding a remarkable run of form that has defined her last few months on tour, the Kazakh star powered past Elina Svitolina to set up a blockbuster championship clash with World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka at the BNP Paribas Open. And fittingly, the upcoming showdown will be a repeat of their thrilling final at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Elena Rybakina’s stunning momentum shows no signs of slowing down. The 2023 Indian Wells champion continued her dominant stretch on Friday night, defeating Elina Svitolina 7-5, 6-4 in a tightly contested semifinal that lasted one hour and 46 minutes.

The victory marked another milestone in a run that has been building since last autumn. Since October, Rybakina has captured major titles, including the WTA Finals and the Australian Open, and her latest win ensured a second career final at Indian Wells.

More impressively, the triumph extended her remarkable streak against elite opposition. The Kazakh has now won 12 consecutive matches against Top-10 opponents, a run that began in Ningbo last October, where she also lifted the title. With Sabalenka awaiting in the final, she will have the chance to extend that record to 13.

Despite trailing 7-8 in their overall head-to-head, Rybakina has won the last two meetings against Sabalenka - both coming in finals, including their most recent clash in Melbourne.

Elena Rybakina was outstanding with her serves against the Ukrainian. She hit six aces and committed just one double fault in comparison to six from Svitolina. During the broadcast, former world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport summed up the sheer power of Rybakina’s delivery, saying, “We haven't seen someone serve this dominant since Serena.”

Can Rybakina put up a similar dominant performance against the world number one? Time will tell! But…

What did Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka say about the Indian Wells final?

The victory against Elina Svitolina sets up a mouth-watering championship match between the two most dominant players on the WTA Tour right now. Elena Rybakina will once again face Sabalenka, renewing a rivalry that has increasingly defined the women’s game in recent months.

Beyond the title, the stakes extend to the rankings as well. Rybakina is guaranteed to climb to World No. 2 after the tournament, regardless of the final result. A victory, however, would further close the gap with Sabalenka as she continues her pursuit of the top ranking for the first time in her career.

Aryna Sabalenka has a 2,892-point lead over Elena Rybakina in the Live Rankings. Winning the title would reduce that gap further.

Aryna Sabalenka, meanwhile, will enter the final with revenge on her mind. Her only loss of the 2026 season came against Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open final, and the Belarusian has already made it clear she plans to respond.

“I'll make sure that I'm more than ready on Sunday, and I'll bring my best tennis, make sure that this is the year,” Sabalenka said. Rybakina, for her part, is embracing the challenge.

“I'm going to fight as much as I can,” she said. “Hopefully it's going to be a great match.”

With the World No. 1 and the new No. 2 set to collide once again in the California desert, Indian Wells is poised for yet another electrifying chapter in one of the WTA Tour’s most compelling rivalries. Who’s your pick in that epic duel?
