Elina Svitolina Flags a Double Threat Ahead of Blockbuster Coco Gauff Clash at Australian Open

Jan 26, 2026, 12:40 PM CUT

Rod Laver Arena witnessed a statement performance on Sunday night as Elina Svitolina rolled back the years with a commanding straight-sets win (6-2, 6-4) over eighth seed Mirra Andreeva. The victory not only booked her place in the AO QF, her 14th at a Grand Slam, but also set up a mouthwatering showdown with the world no. 3 Coco Gauff. Yet, for Svitolina, the challenge ahead isn’t just about facing one of the game’s brightest young stars - there’s another looming threat waiting in Melbourne.

Speaking about her upcoming clash, Svitolina underlined both the tactical and environmental battle she expects. “I have to speak with my coach about the plan that I have to execute. We had some tough matches, tough battles. I think maybe the last 2 were in 3 sets. We played in the final of Auckland a couple of years back. We played also at US Open. We both know each other's game. For me, it’s important tomorrow to work on a few things, speak with my coach, and be ready for the extreme heat as well. We’ll not only be playing against each other, but also against the conditions.” And she’s not wrong to be wary.

The AO has once again been gripped by brutal heat, forcing organizers to adjust schedules and suspend play on exposed courts. Players across the draw have spoken out about the physical toll. Madison Keys admitted she was relieved to finish her match before the worst of the heat, while Jessica Pegula noted how difficult it is to adapt to such conditions without regular exposure. On the men’s side, we saw Tomas Machac require medical assistance and pickle juice to stave off cramps in a grueling four-hour clash.

Even Jannik Sinner was seen struggling with full-body cramps, grimly telling his team on one instance, “I don’t know what to do. I’m f-cked.” So, for Elina Svitolina, this is more like a duel challenge. Coco Gauff can really be a tricky opponent if the match gets extended, and so can the weather conditions.

So far, Elina Svitolina has faced the American thrice. Two of their previous meetings have gone to three sets. Gauff got the better of the Ukrainian in their previous meeting (R32 of the 2025 US Open) by 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. That win helped Gauff take a 2-1 lead over Svitolina in their H2H record.

After that match, Coco Gauff heaped praise on Svitolina, saying, “Every time I play Elina, she’s a fighter. I knew I had to bring my best tennis.” We can expect a similar fight even in this QF clash as well. Gauff has showcased some real resilience in the previous two matches. Each of them has been a three-setter. But Svitolina is yet to drop a set in this tournament. What did both these players say about their performances after their previous matches?

Elina Svitolina and Coco Gauff share thoughts about their performances after their fourth-round match

The fourth round of the AO delivered two standout performances as Elina Svitolina and Coco Gauff booked their places in the QF, showcasing grit, flair, and championship-level composure. Svitolina continued her impressive late-career resurgence with a statement win over Mirra Andreeva, sealing her fourth QF at the AO.

Since her Slam debut in 2012, only Serena Williams, Simona Halep, and Aryna Sabalenka have reached more major QFs. The victory also improved her record against Top 10 opponent at Slams to 7-14.

Reflecting on the emotional and mental intensity of the contest, Elina Svitolina admitted she had to dig deep. “It’s unbelievable. I’m very, very pleased with the performance tonight, and I had to really put up a fight and fight until the very last point. It was an extremely nerve-wracking match, and I was very happy with the way I held myself.”

Facing the other highly talented youngsters (Andreeva), she also revealed her tactical focus throughout the match. ”I was expecting a tough battle and lots of long rallies. I was trying to just move my feet extremely well today, be really focused, and find the small holes in her game and try to use them.”

On the other side of the draw, Coco Gauff delivered one of the matches of the tournament so far, battling past Karolina Muchova 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in a thrilling rollercoaster encounter. With this win, she has now advanced to her third consecutive AO QF, marking her 10th Grand Slam QF overall and improving her 2026 record to 7-1. The reigning French Open champion and former US Open winner is now relishing the challenge of going deep at another major.

“I feel like with each match you start to relax a little bit more, but also, as you keep going, usually the ranking of the opponent gets higher, so the matches should be a bit tougher, which they have been. But I definitely think it's more fun just because you're in great battles and also just being here in Australia. It's the real opportunity to show where your game is.”

Talking about performance, Gauff said that Grand Slams bring out the very best in every player. “Yes, we play warm-up tournaments, but grand slams is where everyone tries to peak at. So you expect to play the peak version of every player. I think it's just a fun challenge.”

With an SF spot on the line, Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina now stand on a collision course, and the winner will go on to face either world number one Aryna Sabalenka or rising American teenager Iva Jovic. Who do you think will win this QF battle?
