Iga Swiatek Delighted After Beating Her ‘Favorite’ Player at Indian Wells

At the BNP Paribas Open, Iga Swiatek once again proved why she remains one of the most dominant forces on the WTA Tour. But beyond the scoreline, her latest win also carried a personal layer of admiration, as the Pole defeated a player she openly calls her “favorite” on the circuit - Karolina Muchova.

Before stepping on court against Muchova in the fourth round at Indian Wells, Swiatek didn’t hide her respect for the Czech star. In fact, she had gone as far as describing Muchova as the women’s tour equivalent of Roger Federer, praising her intelligence, creativity, and smooth shot-making.

However, admiration didn’t stop Swiatek from delivering a ruthless performance. The second seed dismantled the 13th-seeded Muchova 6-2, 6-0, sealing her place in the quarterfinals in just under 80 minutes. After the match, the two shared a warm embrace and laughter at the net - an interaction that reflected the respect between them despite the one-sided result.

Iga Swiatek admitted that she felt her level rising as the match progressed. “Yeah, for sure, I felt great. I felt like I was playing better and better. Just great,” Swiatek said in her on-court interview. She also explained why competing against Muchova feels unique. “She’s my favorite WTA player to watch, so it’s really nice also to play against her. Basically, she might be like the only player I watch, so maybe that’s why I also feel how she plays.”

The match initially appeared competitive when the players were tied 2–2 in the opening set. But from that moment onward, Swiatek shifted gears and completely took control. The Pole went on a ten-game winning streak, overwhelming Muchova with relentless baseline pressure and precise returning. Her return game was particularly lethal, winning 58% of points on Muchova’s serve. On the other side of the net, Swiatek’s serve held firm throughout the contest as she did not face a single break point.

It was a display that highlighted not just power but tactical clarity - something she hinted at in her comments about understanding Muchova’s playing style.

Iga Swiatek’s admiration for Muchova didn’t stop with her words during the interview. Shortly after the match, the six-time Grand Slam champion took to Instagram to acknowledge her opponent. Alongside pictures from the encounter, she wrote, "Thank you, @karolinamuchova; it’s always a pleasure to share the court with you. On to the next one tomorrow. Quarterfinals, let’s go.”

The gesture reflected the mutual respect between the two players, particularly given Muchova’s reputation as one of the most creative shot-makers on tour. Swiatek’s praise for Muchova is hardly surprising to fans familiar with the Czech’s game. Known for her versatility, athleticism, and ability to produce shots from almost anywhere on court, Muchova has long been regarded as one of the most entertaining players to watch.

Despite her talent, consistent success had previously eluded her. That narrative changed earlier this year when Muchova captured her first WTA 1000 title at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, winning six matches in seven days to claim the biggest trophy of her career.

But at Indian Wells, Karolina Muchova didn’t really find her rhythm. What else did Iga Swiatek say after the match?

How did Iga Swiatek manage to put up this stellar show against Karolina Muchova?

While the scoreline suggested a one-sided contest, the Pole later revealed that a blend of smart decision-making, tactical discipline, and comfort in the desert conditions played a key role in her dominant display.

Iga Swiatek secured a convincing straight-set victory, reeling off 10 consecutive games after the first set was tied at 2-2. The win marked her fifth career victory over Muchova, whom she had also beaten at the same stage of the tournament the previous year.

Speaking in her on-court interview, the World No. 2 admitted she felt her level steadily rising as the match progressed. “I felt I was playing better and better, just great,” Swiatek said. The Polish star also highlighted her growing comfort with the unique conditions in Indian Wells, something that has clearly worked in her favor over the years. Her affinity for the surface and environment at Indian Wells is hardly surprising, considering she is already a two-time champion at the tournament.

While the conditions helped, Iga Swiatek emphasized that sharp tactical choices made the biggest difference during the match. In her post-match press conference, the six-time Grand Slam champion broke down how she managed to neutralize Muchova’s versatile game.

“No, I always want to be proactive with my forehand, because this is what gives me points,” Swiatek explained. According to the Pole, her success largely came from selecting the right moments to attack versus when to stay patient in rallies. “I think I just chose the right balls to go forward or to stay back and grind a bit more and play with more shape.”

She further credited her composure for maintaining control throughout the match. “I think just the decision-making was good today, so I didn’t rush, and I had just comfortable situations to do what I wanted to.”

Iga Swiatek summed up her strategy simply: maximize the power and reliability of her forehand while maintaining tactical discipline. “So I think it’s a combination of that, but overall, you know, I always kind of want to do a lot with my forehand.”

With the victory, Iga Swiatek moves one step closer to another title in the California desert. The Polish star, who is chasing her 12th WTA 1000 crown, will next face Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals after the Ukrainian defeated Kateřina Siniaková. Even before the matchup was finalized, Swiatek acknowledged that the next round would demand a high level of discipline, given the defensive strength of potential opponents.

“No matter who I’m gonna play, it’s gonna be a tough match because these are players that are basing their game at being solid, like running to everything and getting every ball back.” She added that patience will be key when facing such resilient competitors.

If her commanding display against Muchova is any indication, Iga Swiatek appears to be peaking at just the right moment in her pursuit of a third Indian Wells title. Do you think Swiatek can put up yet another dominating show against Elina Svitolina in the QF of the Indian Wells Masters?
