Iga Swiatek Remains Unfazed by Recent Results Against Coco Gauff

Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff’s rivalry added another compelling chapter at this year’s United Cup, where the American once again emerged on top with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win in Sydney. It marked Gauff’s fourth consecutive straight-sets victory over the Pole. Her incredible performances in the last few meetings have already fueled talks of one of the fastest-evolving rivalries in women’s tennis. Yet, despite the shifting H2H narrative, the Pole insists the recent losses don’t linger in her mind.
Asked whether dropping her last few matches against Gauff has started to play on her mind, the world number two was blunt. “Honestly, it doesn’t. When I was winning against her, it didn’t. That’s why I guess it was possible for me to continue. Because I wasn’t taking it for granted or coming to a match unfocused.” For Swiatek, the changing record is less about psychological baggage and more about adaptation.
“I guess it kind of tells you something more about the game, or things you should work on or improve. Also, she improved. The head-to-head doesn’t really matter.” Not long ago, Iga Swiatek held an overwhelming 11-1 advantage over Coco Gauff, a stat that once suggested a one-sided matchup. Over the past year and a half, however, that gap has narrowed to 11-5, underlining how dramatically the dynamic has changed. Swiatek herself views each encounter in isolation.
“Maybe for her, if you ask the same question, it’s different. But I just really want to treat every match as a separate story. Every match is also in different conditions,” she added.
Former players have also weighed in on what’s unfolding between Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff. On the Nothing Major podcast, Sam Querrey described their clashes as the beginnings of something special. He said, “There’s a little rivalry going on between Coco and Iga. I love it. There’s just a little animosity between the two, and it’s like making for a great little rivalry.”
Coming to the 2026 Australian Open, both Gauff and Swiatek have the chance to meet each other in the final, not before that. And guess what? Both these players have now secured a winning start in the tournament.
Iga Swiatek started her campaign with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over China’s Yue Yuan. While Coco Gauff defeated Kamilla Rakhimova 6-2, 6-3 in her first-round match. After her first-round win, Gauff was also asked to reflect on how she has managed to turn things around in her rivalry with Iga Swiatek. What was her response, though?
Coco Gauff sheds light on her fightback in the H2H record against Iga Swiatek
For the longest time, Iga Swiatek represented Coco Gauff’s toughest puzzle on Tour. What once looked like a one-sided rivalry has now transformed into one of the most intriguing head-to-head battles in women’s tennis. Tennis analysts point to a clear evolution in Gauff’s approach.
Her former coach, Brad Gilbert, who played a pivotal role during her breakthrough win over Swiatek at the 2023 Cincinnati Open, believes belief has been the defining factor. “Playing with more belief, obviously. Now vs. Iga, she seems to be able to break down her forehand. Probably the biggest thing is not feeling the need to press early in points.”
Adding to that assessment, four-time Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters highlighted the element of variety in Gauff’s game. From changes in pace to smarter shot selection, Clijsters emphasized that unpredictability, not just power, has made Gauff far more dangerous in recent matchups against Swiatek.
Recently, even Coco Gauff opened up about the mental hurdle she had to overcome to turn the rivalry around. Reflecting on their H2H record, she said, “Yeah, in the past, there were no head-to-heads I felt really bad about, except that one. In the past, I used to think about it so much, because you want to get the one win. I think once I got that, it kind of, like, I erased the other matches.”
Speaking about the Pole, she further added, “Obviously, she’s a great player, and she deserved those wins, but I felt like a lot of those — some of those losses. I won’t say a lot, because she just outplayed me, but some of them, at least at the beginning, it just was already on the mental deficit. I think once I erased that mental deficit, I was able to play freely.”
Although there’s still a big gap in the H2H, Coco Gauff is happy to play freely against the Pole in recent times. Now, it’ll be interesting to see if we could get the chance to witness these two taking each other on at the 2026 AO final or not. Who, according to you (between Swiatek and Gauff), has the higher chance to win the title this year?
