Serena Williams Breaks Silence on Her Tennis Comeback Talks

Dec 3, 2025, 1:40 PM CUT

For a few electric hours, the tennis world felt like it had been jolted back to a familiar past - one ruled by Serena Williams. A single development, a simple update, was enough to send fans and pundits spiraling into speculations: Serena had quietly re-entered the sport’s registered drug-testing pool. In an era where even the smallest breadcrumb can ignite a wildfire, this one was a spark tossed into a dry forest. Social media erupted. Fan forums buzzed with theories.

Is she preparing for one last dance? Had the 23-time Grand Slam champion finally decided to test the limits of what a comeback would be like at 44? As the noise reached a crescendo, Williams - always the master of timing - decided she had seen enough. Shortly after, Adrian Bassett, a spokesperson for ITIA, confirmed, “It is correct that she is back on the Registered Testing Pool list. At this stage, we have no other information,” Williams shared a tweet denying her return.

“Omg, yall I'm NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy -” she tweeted. And just like that, the dream balloon popped. So that’s the end of that? Well, renowned tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg questioned, “Then why did you apply to reenter the testing pool?” Players who decided to return to testing need to provide information about their time and locations when they are available to give samples. In fact, they also need to complete testing for six months before they are allowed to return to competition. What’s cooking inside? We’re not sure!

But following her three-set defeat to Ajla Tomljanović at the US Open in 2022, Serena Williams said she didn’t want to use the word “retiring” but instead explained she was “evolving” away from tennis. So, even a slight here and there makes the fans go wild over a possible return of the tennis great. For example, in July this year, social media erupted in a similar way when she shared a video clip where she was seen hitting a few balls. Guess what?

In that video clip, it never looked as if she had ever left this sport. Same fluency, same intent, and top-notch fitness level. Speaking about her return to the sport, even her elder sister, Venus Williams, once admitted, “I keep saying to my team: The only thing that would make this better is if she was here. Like, we always did everything together, so of course I miss her. But if she comes back, I'm sure she'll let y'all know.”

And if the tennis world reacted like this to a mere procedural detail, imagine the reaction if she ever did decide to leave the door open again. But for now, she’s made it clear. The legend has spoken. The chapter remains closed. But how has her life been after retirement, though?

Serena Williams talks about her life after retirement

For most of the world, Serena Williams walked away from tennis in 2022 with a farewell worthy of a legend. But for Serena herself, the silence that followed the roar of stadiums wasn’t ‌easy to embrace. In a candid reflection, the American superstar peeled back the glamorous curtain on retirement, admitting that trading the rhythm of the Tour for a new chapter came with its own set of challenges.

She is now not only a wife to Alexis Ohanian but also a mother of two beautiful girls, Olympia (8) and Adira (2). In a recent interview with PORTER, Serena Williams spoke about her post-tennis chapter: “No matter how prepared you are to retire, and particularly from doing something every day at such a high level, it’s hard. I really prepped myself the best way I could, but it’s something that’s still a little difficult.”

When your identity has been sculpted over a lifetime of dominance, stepping away doesn’t just change your schedule - it shakes your sense of self. She further added, “I feel fortunate that I’ve had a career and that I don’t have to do what most people do. I’m very lucky. I put in the hard work, like we all are doing, but I did it a little bit earlier. So, I think that’s really working in my favor. And [now I can] just put my kids first. I want to be around my family. I’m cooking every night that I’m home. I’m home 29 nights a month… Sometimes I’ll fly to New York, do what I need to do, fly back and be home in time for dinner.”

Her days are now mostly filled with projects, philanthropy, fashion, family, and the kind of self-paced ambition she never got to enjoy during her playing years. And as she continues carving out her post-tennis identity, one thing remains unchanged - she’s still redefining what greatness looks like, just in a brand-new arena. It’s a bit challenging, but let me tell you, that’s Serena Williams, and you know what, she loves challenges…
